"5k For First Responders" - Saturday October 26, 2024
The Trooper Black Foundation, established in 2019, is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its inception was triggered by a local controversy surrounding the placement of a Thin Blue Line flag by the slain Trooper's youngest son and wife on a utility pole in front of their house on the anniversary of his death. This act served as a tribute to his sacrifice and a firm declaration that his memory would endure. However, the flag's meaning became a subject of heated debate on social media, causing division not only within the town but also across the entire state. The flag held different interpretations for different people, evoking strong emotional reactions from both sides.
When town officials approached Mary Andrews, the widow of Trooper Black, suggesting the idea of installing a memorial bench in town to honor her late husband, her response was poignant: "it's fifty-five years too late for that." Instead, she proposed the creation of a nonprofit organization that would assist police officers and their families, hoping to channel something positive out of the controversy. This concept evolved and materialized with the support of local attorney Greg Orso, resulting in the establishment of the Trooper Black Foundation. The foundation's mission expanded to encompass aiding all First Responders and their families.
The Trooper Black Foundation strives to allocate funds raised for the benefit of professionals and their families across all sectors of First Responders, including Police, Fire, EMS, and Dispatch, during times of unforeseen crises or financial hardship. While our primary objective is to focus on assisting individuals within the state of Maine or the southern New Hampshire region, we may make exceptions in cases beyond this area if they are particularly notable and deserving of support.
It is important to note that no funds raised by the Trooper Black Foundation will be allocated for the personal benefit or salaries of any organization members. We are committed to ensuring that all donations are directed towards assisting those who bravely put their lives on the line to protect us in today's world.
